Slate grey

driving across the city
at night in my white
van on work-lease.
it’s a birthday.
we are visiting
family. you
are beside me,
and idly playing
with the radio.
you are trying
to connect it
to your phone. the sky
is quite slate grey, quite flat
and quite featureless – tiles
might be falling
from roofs
to the street. you say
something dull
about being
quite happy.
your happiness
hits me
like a falling
roof tile.
